The installation of a combined heat and power system (CHP) began over at the Eastlink Centre early last week.
Brian Glavin, Infrastructure & Economic Development Director with the City of Grande Prairie, said he expects the project to be completed by April.
“We use natural gas as a fuel source to generate electricity and through the electrical generation process, we are going to capture the waste heat from that in order to preheat the water that we use at Eastlink for the pools,” Glavin said. “At the end of the day, it allows us to lower our input costs for maintaining the pool and the Eastlink Centre, in general.
“Currently, it is a boiler system and what this will do is it will preheat the water so there is less of a differential between the water that is being fed in and the temperature we need to achieve for the pools.”
The installation project involves work both outside and inside the building Glavin said.
